Evelina London Children’s Hospital
Saving more lives
Expanding the existing Evelina London Children’s Hospital with a state of the art building that can evolve over time to meet the changing needs of London’s children
Hawkins\Brown were instrumental in translating our vision for a world class integrated children’s hospital into an exemplar healthcare design that gained unanimous support at planning committee. This was no small feat considering the triangular shape of the building, the location within a UNESCO world heritage site and the flexible approach required to deliver a successful application during COVID-19.
Evelina London Children’s Hospital is an internationally renowned centre of excellence in children’s healthcare, based on the St Thomas’ Hospital site in Lambeth. Demand for their specialist services is high; patient numbers have doubled since 2005 and Evelina now cares for over 100,000 children and their families each year. The new building will be hard-working and sustainable, enabling a long-life, loose fit approach to healthcare provision. It will suit the needs of the Evelina now, in ten years’ and beyond.
Accommodation will be provided over 13 floors; several of them connected to the existing building enabling it to operate as one. There will be 120 new beds, 14 new operating theatres, new procedure rooms and imaging facilities. The result will be reduced waiting times, integrated services and improved patient experience and outcomes. The extension will contain more spaces for patients and families to relax including a new roof terrace with fantastic views towards the Palace of Westminster.
